“We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible threads, and along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes and return to us as results.” ~ Herman Melville
Isn't it interesting how many quotable maxims can apply to the digital world as well as the traditional world? Now the invisible threads include the structure of a web we call the Internet.
I don't know anyone in Haiti, in fact I know very little about Haiti, but our five trips to Mississippi to help with the clean-up and then the reconstruction along with the construction and teaching in Mexico, Ukraine and China, I feel a very close tie. The electronic images of children and injured and desolate feel like my children and I am so helpless here in Oregon. It's another one of the invisible threads that connect us, and it's the digital technology that brings them so close to us.
But back home we must continue our routines. It is our routines that gives stability when the Haitians need it most. And our routine is to develop and share a better understanding of the use of blogs. It may be a tool to help developing counties in the future.
THAT is what I believe. There ARE invisible links. This is turning into a conspiracy theory kind of feeling... :) I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but I truly believe that mirror neurons play a HUGE part in why digital technology pulls us all in so much.
To every act, there is a reaction. To every cause, there is an effect. No matter how big or small it is inevitible. The moon affects the tides, the use of harmful gasses affects our atmosphere, our earth, our perceptions affect our beliefs. Each species has a purpose and a connection to life on earth. It is an absolute truth that we cannot live alone and at some level we are interdependent on one another.
